Dogs and strawberries - safe fruit treats for pets

You’re slicing up strawberries, watermelon, or maybe a juicy peach—and those puppy eyes are locked in. But can you share? The good news? Some summer fruits are safe (and even healthy) for dogs—in moderation.

Here’s what you need to know before offering a bite.

Yes! Dogs Can Eat Strawberries

Strawberries are safe for dogs and offer a few health benefits. They’re full of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C—and their natural sweetness makes them a hit with most pups.

“Strawberries are low in calories and high in water content, which makes them a hydrating treat,” notes the American Kennel Club (AKC). “They also contain an enzyme that may help whiten your dog’s teeth.”

Just remember: moderation matters. Too many strawberries (or any fruit) can cause an upset stomach. Wash them thoroughly, remove the stems, and cut them into small pieces to avoid choking.

Other Summer Fruits That Are Dog-Safe

Here are a few more fruits your dog can enjoy in small amounts:

🫐 Blueberries

According to the American Kennel Club, they are rich in antioxidants and great for training treats

🍉 Watermelon

Full of water and vitamins A, B6, and C—the ASPCA cautions to just avoid the rind and seeds

🍎 Apples

A crisp, low-calorie snack—the American Kennel Club recommends removing the seeds and core before sharing

🍈 Cantaloupe

High in fiber and beta-carotene, the melon is best shared in bite-sized chunks, according to the ASPCA

🍍 Pineapple

Fresh is fine in small doses, but the American Kennel Club advises to skip canned versions, which often contains added sugar

All of these fruits should be served plain—no added sugar, whipped cream, or chocolate dips!

Fruits to Avoid

Not all summer fruits are safe. In fact, some are toxic to dogs and should always be off-limits:

🍇 Grapes and raisins

Can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts (ASPCA)

🍒 Cherries

The pits, stems, and leaves contain cyanide and can be harmful, according to the American Kennel Club

🍑 Peaches and plums

The fruit flesh is okay in tiny amounts, but pits are a choking hazard and also contain cyanide

🥑 Avocado

Healthy for humans, they contain persin, which can cause stomach upset in some dogs

Important: If your dog has eaten any of these fruits, contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

A Few Fruit Guidelines

Before you share fruit with your pup:

  • Wash thoroughly to remove pesticides or residues
  • Remove seeds, pits, and rinds
  • Cut into small, chewable pieces
  • Start with a tiny amount to watch for reactions

Important: If your dog has diabetes, allergies, or is on a special diet, check with your veterinarian first.

Many veterinarians point to the “10 percent rule” The American Kennel Club explains this as making sure pet treats (which include fruit) make up no more than 10% of your pet’s calories each day.

Final Thoughts on Fruit

Strawberries and other summer fruits can be a fun, fresh treat—but only if they’re safe and served the right way. Stick to dog-approved produce, skip the sugar, and keep portions small. As always, when in doubt, ask your vet.
